We were presented with a unique challenge – installing a sliding barn door to create privacy for a home office with an open transition from the foyer. The clients wanted to be able to close off the space from their children while the office was in use, yet hide the doors when not in use to keep the space open and airy.
The opening was nearly 7 feet wide and 7.5 feet tall and had only a few inches on one side. As such, the oversized barn doors could only slide off to one side.
We constructed from a combination of reclaimed and new wood using traditional mortise and tenon method. The new wood was aged using our favorite DIY vinegar, black tea and rust solution. Reclaimed window panes added the finishing touch.
These doors are a statement piece of their own – even more so with the clever way our client chose to display vintage postcards behind the window panes so that they are visible when the door is both open and closed!
